Society has made great strides in treating those in the LGBTQ community with dignity and respect – in 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was legal in the united states, proclaiming that “love is love.”
It was a beautiful moment in U.S. politics – with couples crying, rushing to wed, and celebrating outside the Supreme Court.
But the fight for equality isn’t over.
LGBTQ folks can get married, yes, but the next day they can be discriminated against at work or trying to buy a house. They can be harassed and assaulted just for trying to use the bathroom, or for walking down the street.
We have a long way to go. So here are 5 LGBTQ groups you can make a donation to this month to help reach full equality.
Lambda Legal works to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.
Your local LGBTQ group
Local laws around LGBTQ equality and protections for the community vary from city to city and state to state, which is why it’s so important to have local groups and organizations to help navigate that. Find your local groups here.
To change our laws, we need to change our culture, too. GLAAD is a dynamic media force working to rewrite the script for LGBTQ acceptance and tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change.
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.
The Transgender Law Center works to change law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression.
