“You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” is the perfect self-help book because it doesn’t feel like a self-help book! Jen Sincero opens the reader to learning by disguising life lessons and “ah-ha” moments in stories of her own trials and tribulations.

The introduction of any book is a “make it or break it” moment, setting the tone for a reader to decide if they want to take the time to continue on. Sincero uses the opening to level with the reader, explaining how she once felt the realm of self-help was a load of crap. Her frank analysis and sense of humor allows the reader to let their guard down and enjoy.

The book is then broken down into five parts: explaining “How you got This Way,” “How to Embrace your Inner Badass,” “How to Tap into the Motherlode,” “How to get over your B.S. Already” and “How to Kick Some Ass.” Sincero charms readers with stories of her wild and crazy times, including, but not limited to, a man in a loin-cloth, a bird flying around her living room and her band, Crotch. Each story reveals a life lessons, which the author breaks down in approachable and easy to understand bullet points.

Though Sincero’s writing style is very simplistic – she doesn’t use overly flowery verbiage, and never talks  down to the reader – she asks insightful questions and inspires deep conversation throughout the book. Her approach is focused on comfort, understanding and relatability, allowing the reader to absorb more and truly understand “why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love and how to use The Force to kick some serious ass.”
